Data Centers in Nevada: Understanding and Shaping the Impacts – December 10, 2:00-3:30 pm

Attend by using this zoom webinar link.  (Please copy to your calendar)

Description: Data centers are coming to Nevada.  Nevada offers relatively low cost electricity, tax incentives and a favorable regulatory environment. This development can provide jobs and revenues to governments. This development may also negatively impact water supplies, electricity rates and reliability, and community livability.  In this forum, our panelists will each share their views briefly on this development from a planning perspective, scientific understanding and from NGOs concerned about environmental, energy and community impacts. We’ll include significant time for moderator and audience discussion organized around 1) understanding why so many data centers are coming to Nevada, 2) what the impacts are likely to be, and how 3) local and state government, industry and the public can shape these impacts, to improve any benefits and mitigate the harms.

Panelists:

  • Manny Becerra: Planning Commissioner, Reno Planning Commission
  • Emily Walsh:Nevada Clean Energy Policy Analyst, Western Resource Advocates
  • Erik Henzl: Staff Research Scientist, Division of Hydrologic Sciences, Desert Research Institute (DRI)
  • Lina Tanner: Managing Member, Tanner Law & Strategy Group
  • Kerry Rohrmeier: Planning Commissioner, Reno Planning Commission, and Nevada Climate and Energy Strategy Director, The Nature Conservancy
  • Olivia Tanager: Toiyabe Chapter Director,Sierra Club

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) greatly appreciates the participation of the sustainability community of Nevada in the Partners for a Sustainable Nevada since 2021.  NDEP is transitioning the management of the Partners for a Sustainable Nevada (PSN) to its members. When PSN was first established, NDEP aimed to bring together nonprofits, businesses, and government entities committed to advancing sustainability across the State. From the outset, NDEP envisioned that PSN would eventually become a self-sustaining, member-led initiative.

The PSN Climate Team, a focus group formed under PSN, plans to continue, separate from NDEP, as the Nevada Climate Team (NVCT). NVCT will continue as an informal collaborative group that shares information, networks and provides support to each other in doing our own climate work which helps mitigate and adapt to climate change. Additionally, the Nevada Climate Team will organize and present the Nevada Climate Forums going forward. For information on the Climate Team, email Brian Thornton, brian.thornton.nv@gmail.com.   The Nevada Climate Team will not be continuing other aspects of the Partners for a Sustainable Nevada.
