Tweet Team Expands
Social media advances most of our goals:
“If you want to join the Tweet Team, email us: support@cclnv.org”
- Lobbying — by mentioning our MOC’s twitter names, they or their staff will SEE our tweets.
- Grassroots, Grasstops and Chapter Development – if you are even modestly active, you have “followers” who will see your tweets. That can create awareness, action and even engagement in CCL programs.
What is Amplification? How does it work?
The “reach” of anything you do on Twitter — who sees your tweets — is a function of two things: a) how many followers you have and b) the Twitter algorithm, which tries to figure out how relevant or engaging your tweet will be to your followers.
The algorithm relies heavily on how the first few folks who see your tweet react to it. If you announce the birth of a new child and include a picture, it’s likely everyone who sees that will react … either with a comment, a re-tweet or a “like.” Twitter notices that “signal” and knows that your tweet is important and relevant to your followers. So, it will push your tweet into the newsfeed of all your followers with high priority.
So, when you post a tweet, if the rest of us “give it some love” by re-tweeting, commenting on or liking (♥) it, Twitter will more likely show it more aggressively to ALL your followers.
So, that’s how the CCL Nevada Tweet Team works: You tweet something. You email the link for your tweet to Tweet Team <tweeters@willisdomain.com>, which auto-sends a copy of your email to each of the members of the CCL Nevada Tweet Team.
Each of us then gets the email. By clicking on the link to your tweet, we are quickly taken to the tweet. Liking it takes literally one click, re-tweeting it takes one or two clicks, and commenting takes only a few more keystrokes.
How To Amplify Our Impact on MOCs and Our Message
We want our Members of Congress to see our Tweets. The best way to do that is to “at-mention” them — a function usually written as “@mentioning” someone.
The congressional staff for any MOC gets a report for ANY tweet that mentions the MOC’s Twitter name. If you tweet “We need to pass a carbon-fee-and-dividend policy, @SenCortezMasto.” the Senator’s office will see that tweet!
Here are the Twitter names of the six members of the Nevada delegation:
- @SenCortezMasto
- @SenJackyRosen
- @repdinatitus
- @MarkAmodeiNV2
- @RepSusieLee
- @RepHorsford
Generally, it’s a good idea to @mention YOUR Representative and our Senators on most of your climate-related tweets.
OK, let’s assume you’ve tweeted that Lake Mead is in bigger trouble than we thought, and you linked to a new study from UNLV. So what? What do you want Congress to do about it? Let’s assume you want to ask Senator Rosen to support carbon pricing. OK, you could expand your tweet to say something like “Lake Mead is in even bigger trouble than we thought, and we need Congress to ACT! We need carbon pricing! @SenJackyRosen.”
That tweet shares important information, adds an ASK (“we need carbon pricing”) and @mentions Senator Rosen.
Instead of asking for carbon pricing in the abstract, you could have been more specific — e.g., “Please pass Sen. Whitehouse’s Save Our Future Act” or “Vote for S.685 – America’s Clean Future Fund Act.” (Those are both carbon pricing bills.)
Here’s a great situation where it’s wise to use a “hashtag” — a keyword preceded by a # (hash) symbol — to generalize what you want. If you use hashtags from popular movements like #BlackLivesMatter or #PriceOnCarbon, you will not only clarify your “ask” of Sen. Rosen, but also invite other people who are following that hashtag* to see your tweet and maybe “follow” you and expand your influence on Twitter.
* Twitter has a feature allowing you to search for all tweets that have a certain hashtag. If, e.g., you want to see tweets from everyone who is commenting on Super Bowl 2022, you can find out the hashtag people are using for that event and “follow” it.
Citizens’ Climate Lobby will try to coordinate which hashtags to use in order to create a larger critical mass. Right now, we are using #PriceOnCarbon to try to get the Senate to embrace carbon pricing. Once they do, we’ll push for carbon fee and dividend. And, if they go for that, we’ll push for the specs in the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act!

Summary
Here’s how best to use your time on the Tweet Team:
- When you get an email with a link to a tweet, click through to Twitter and read it.
- If acceptable, give it some love — comment, re-tweet, or like.
- Optional — scan your news feed and engage with other worthy climate subjects.
- Optional — use Twitter to follow other subjects you are interested in; by engaging with, e.g., education policy or news about coronavirus, your Twitter influence will grow over time, organically. Note: this is entirely optional.
- Follow the CCL entities listed above if you haven’t done so; and follow other Nevada Tweet Team members when you see them in your news feed.
- @mention your Members of Congress as appropriate.
- Use hashtags as appropriate.
- Forward the email you get in step 1 above to any friends who might have an interest. They don’t need to be members of CCL to join our Tweet Team. All they have to do is send an email to support@cclnv.org and ask to be added to the email group.
These steps are included in the footer to each email you get as a member of the Tweet Team. That footer says:
