Survey: Voters Support US Climate Aid To Poorer Nations

From Yale Program of Climate Communications

Dear Friends,

As the world descends on Glasgow, Scotland for the 26th UN Conference to negotiate a global response to climate change, we are pleased to release a short report, on Americans’ public support for international action, from our latest national survey.   One of the critical issues to be discussed at the Glasgow conference is financial support from wealthier countries that have emitted the most carbon pollution to help developing countries that have emitted the least carbon pollution and are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. We find growing majority support among registered voters for the U.S. providing financial aid and technical support to developing countries to limit their greenhouse gas emissions (i.e., mitigation, 66%, +8 percentage points since our previous survey in March 2021) and to help them prepare for the impacts of global warming (i.e., adaptation, 61%, +7 percentage points).

Nearly three in four registered voters (73%) also support the U.S. government’s pledge to reduce the nation’s carbon pollution 50% by the year 2030. Nearly all liberal Democrats (97%) and moderate/conservative Democrats (91%), and about two in three liberal/moderate Republicans (68%) support the pledge. By contrast, about one in three conservative Republicans (32%) support the pledge.

The full report includes many other important findings, including public support for the U.S., other industrialized, or developing countries to do more to address global warmingthe U.S. pressuring other countries to reduce their carbon pollution; and the U.S. reducing its greenhouse gas emissions regardless of what other countries do.For those of you going to Glasgow, Ed Maibach and I will be there – we hope to see you!As always, thanks for your interest and support!

Cheers,Tony
