Global Carbon Budget Now at 380 Gigatons CO2E. Nine years until 1.5ºC!
When I joined CCL in 2017, I went to the DC conference and learned about the carbon budget — the amount of GHGs that the IPCC said we could add to the atmosphere and still keep global warming to 1.5ºC. At the then-current rates of greenhouse gas emissions, we had about 15 years before spending down that budget to zero.
That observation is what drove the urgency to reduce GHG emissions by 50% within 10 years and net-zero by 2050. Like the family budget that faces trouble, the faster you stop spending, the further your savings will go.
Well, a well-regarded Earth Science report, Global Carbon Budget 2022, cut that window at current pollution pace to 9 years: See
World has nine years to avert catastrophic warming, study shows per the Washington Post.
